Karva chauth this year is falling on 7th October 2009. karva chauth celebrated especially in north India by married women. It happens on the 4th day of the dark moon of kartik (oct-nov) . there are a lots of stories related to actually why this day is celebrate and its significance like the story of Queen Veeravati , the legend of mahabharta, the story of the Satyavan and Savitri, The Legend of Karva.
As the name signifies, Karva meaning a clay pot and chauth corresponding to the fourth, this festival is commemorated on the the fourth day after the Full Moon in Kartik month of Hindu calendar. On this day , women keeps fast for the long life of their husbands. The festival of Karva Chauth is symbolic of the unflagging loyalty of a wife towards her husband. It is the celebration of the cherish able moments of the relationship which is the notion of sacredness, chastity and demureness, swabbing the lives of both husband and wife with the colors of love and devotion. The wife observes fast signifying that she can take hardships for her husband and husband reciprocates it with appreciation. Henna or Mehndi is considered to be auspicious for married women, and is a necessary part of the Karva Chauth ritual. On this fast , women don’t eat or drink whole day till they see moon. Some of them (women) eat food and drink water before the sunrise ( around 4:00am ) till the star in the sky and then that is sargi which is given by mother-in-law . they don’t eat till they see the moon.

In the night women see the moon by carrying a plate in which they carry a earthern lamp and a glass of water , rice and sindhur and net .
They see the moon through net and then pray for their husband’s longlife like moon . they give the following things to the moon( water , sindhur , mithai , rice and dup) and drink water and eat something from husband’s hand , this way u break the fast with blessings.
Now astrological part is that mars is entering in cancer sign (deblated) and sun is also entering in libra sign . so both of them are entering in deblated sign . so those who has a malefic effects of mars and sun in their horoscope , they shoud also do some kind of astrological remedies to get rid of malefic effects of these two planets sun and mars . so on this day it is a good idea if they can also donate things related to mars and sun , so they can nullify the malefic result of sun and moon and later on do pooja for them .

FOR SUN : Keep a fast on Sunday for sun or donate gur , feed the cow with jaggery on Sunday
FOR MARS: Donate red gram dal on Tuesday and recite hanuman chalisa
